Houston had a snow day. Most I’ve seen here in my life I think.
Oh hey
I’ve been getting at least a post a year here. It’s always a new years resolution to write more about my life, although it seems like I don’t make the time for it, even though I’m on the computer 50+ hours a week.
Blog Updates
Decided to refresh the layout again. Realized all the post images were mostly gone. Lots of refactoring, still using Hugo. Switched all the headers to YAML instead of TOML for readability and my own sanity. Fixed a lot of markdown warnings in the backend and removed some old posts I don’t like, there’s probably more too.
It’s 2025. I started this in March 2003! Thats a 22 year old blog! You’d think I’d have more content, but I really just forget to write here. Sometimes I’ll journal something and think “this could be a blog post”, or sometimes something in life will happen and I’ll think “I should blog this”. I just need to write more here, maybe for legacy, although once I’m gone, only the wayback machine will keep it, the virtual hosts will shut off due to non payment, and the domains will expire.
I’ve got plenty of time to worry about legacy, but for right now, I’m gonna try and update here more often. It’s much healthier than the other places I’m sure.
Lots of stuff going on digitally
- I’ve started a blog for technical only stuff, ravnx.com. Thats my old IRC handle from EFNet from the 90s till, well, sometimes I still get on and say hi on my old channels. I split it up to keep the super technical stuff out of my life happenings.
- I’ve also started a blog for ham stuff, mostly I need a place to store important bookmarks for myself, k5mjp.com, might post about radio projects and happenings related to radio. That’ll keep it seperate from my life stuff.
- I’m on blue.sky, trying to be more active.
- I’ve been on Mastodon but barely use it. I only have four friends.
- Thinking about data legacy for twitter, as I want to close down my account but would like to backup my feed on my blog or something. Not sure of my options, this is a todo. I’d like to exit and delete my data.
- Facebook: Barely on there. I need to delete the apps, but I use groups for social cordination due to most groups being on there. 2025 I plan on sunsetting it. But also there’s photos, posts, lots of data legacy there too. I need to get my few chat groups to migrate over to some other group message. I am a big supporter of Signal, and always advocate to use that. You can find me their by my phone number if you know it, you’re welcome to message me. Its the same phone number I’ve had since 1999.
- Reddit: I’m always on reddit. I stay pretty active in my hobbies and tech groups.
Speaking of hobbies
It seems like I keep writing over the years “ahh! i have too many hobbies”. Still stands. I juggle things and go back and forth all the time, its hard to find time to do all the things in life I want to do. Let’s make a list of the things I actively juggle (in no specific order)
- Ham Radio (and GRMS, MURS) plus all kinds of radio stuff. Digital modes.
- Photography - Film, including medium formats, digital, rangefinders, SLRs
- Cycling - Road always, but I want to get a gravel or mountain bike
- Hiking - I dont hike enough, I need to make more trips than 1-2 a year
- Camping - Used to camp a few times a year, now I’m lucky to get one night
- Motorcycles - My battery might be dead?
- Saltwater Reef Fishtanks - Still going on 14 years now
- Running - Havent run yet in 2025.
- GPS stuff (Wayfinding, Geocaching, etc.)
- Journaling - Always keep a paper journal
- Fountain Pens - I have too many, need to post for sale
- Cigars - I still have a ton from the mid 2000s in monitored storage just resting
- Agave - My agave collection wants to see me again, but I dont drink much these days
- Coding - SOOO MANY coding projects. Outside of work, its hard to schedule time to work on personal projects.
- Social Media - This blog, bluesky, mastodon, and the legacy ones I am mostly rid of (Insta,FB,X), all need my attention.
- Saxaphone - I played the sax from 1994 - 2002 or so. I miss it. I’d like to buy another Tenor and pick it back up again, I’m always watching ebay (for the last several years), but what I want is too expensive.
- Other music - I’d love to get a keyboard, or synth, and learn more music.
- Random Electronics - I’ve go so many RaspberryPi’s they’re all over the house, one that monitors a plant, one that displays the current bitcoin price, a few piholes, a vintage game emulator, not to mention many others just sitting and waiting on jobs, even have a few pico’s sitting around. Need to sort things out.
- WoW - Man I always forget about World of Warcraft, I havent logged in since last November. I tend to pick it up, binge it for a few weeks and then quit for months. I have lots of nostalgia for the world, since I spent so many years immersed in it. I don’t like the time it sucks, but I have fond memories of it. I’ve almost played it as long as this blog has been around!
Seems like this is just a short list. I feel like I am out of time to do the things I want, because I dont have enough time to do them. Sometimes it makes me shut down, or just interact with reddit for a few hours. I get time guilt a lot, where I feel like I’ve wasted the day when I could have knocked out some project. I definitely should try and combine hobbies (walking the dog with a camera and a ham radio, using fountain pens to manually log ham radio contacts), but it still doesn’t feel like it’ll be enough.
I must have 50 projects in my personal life. Not to mention 30+ work projects to finish.
I’ll get there.
