Wow, I must have missed this news. Not sure how I feel. IMHO programming languages should be free and open. You can make your own IDE and sell it, but really the right to use the language should be free, or even in the case of Java, sell your VM to people.

Maybe I’m not well versed enough on the whole ordeal. Any insight anyone?

I’m basically just adding this so Google will pick it up. I’ve made a group on Google for IT workers/employees/managers etc in the Freight Forwarding, NVOCC, import/export field to talk about things happening IT related in the industry, and to share ideas and such. Right now, there isn’t such a forum, group, or anything like this.

It would be nice to see how other people have solved common problems, etc.

Wooden Video Art

I want this in my apartment. Damn neat.

he Wooden Mirror project is an art installation, and as such the goals leading to its creation are a bit vague. The piece explores the line between analog and digital. In the essence of the piece is the notion of inflicting digital order on a material that is as analog as it gets ñ wood. I was hoping to take the computational power of a computer and video camera , and seamlessly integrate them into the physicality warmth and beauty of a wooden mirror. The piece reflects any object or person in front of it by organizing the wooden pieces. It moves fast enough to create live animation.

By Paul Festa – CNET

A patent underlying one of the Web’s most popular graphics formats is set to expire later this month, raising the question of whether a rival, open format, created as a royalty-free alternative, will become obsolete.

The situation has also rekindled debate about patents, innovation and the freedom of communication.

In the United States, the patent for the Lempel-Ziv-Welch, or LZW, compression algorithm expires June 20. LZW forms the basis of the popular GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) design.

Sharp Zaurus Review

Very detailed review on the new Zaurus SL-5600.

“The new Zaurus SL-5600 from Sharp is a linux-based PDA with a 400MHz Intel XScale (PXA250) CPU. The street price is currently around $500 for the SL-5600. Sharp calls these devices Personal Mobile Tools, and if it were up to me I’d call the Zaurus, say, an “Ultra-Light Computer”, but I’ll use the term PDA here. The 5600 is an upgraded version of the 5500 which has been widely available for over a year, and the appearance is almost identical including the distinctive miniature keyboard which hides behind the quick button panel. The Zaurus is a very feature-rich device with plenty of power and expandability.”
